Who is responsible for absurd WORDS?!

31 January 2010

The gospel according to Georges Duhamel:

“I have too much respect for the idea of God to hold Him responsible for such an absurd world.”

So who do we hold responsible for this world?
Its absurdness?
Its mess?

We look at the mess of the world and conclude God as designer to be “absurd.” We look at the complexity of the world and conclude Chance as designer to be quite reasonable. What are we really talking about? Respectfully?

Should we respectfully argue about absurdities?

It seems to me that people who believe in God are often inclined to blame themselves for the bad things and to give God credit for the good things. On the other side of the pew are the people that don’t believe in God and they often speak of the idea that excludes itself from bad things while they take credit for the good things. Perhaps both of these positions are absurd in their strict sense.

Who do we hold responsible for this world?
Its grandness?
Its wonder?

To see the world as more than a mess of absurdness is to begin to shape the discussion in a way that merits thoughtful interaction. It is no difficult thing to make conclusions with one side of the story.

I would imagine that Mr. Duhamel’s thoughts regarding the physical world or his metaphysical ideas of the world are more robust that the silliness that has been quoted in this book.

Mr. Duhamel, I have too much respect for your ability to have ideas to hold you responsible for such absurd words.
